Barry University and the City of Hollywood, Florida, gave new life to an old firehouse (located at 421 North 21st Avenue in Downtown Hollywood) by converting the empty space into classrooms for medical students. University and city officials commemorated the grand opening celebration on Friday, January 13, 2012, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The Hollywood City Commission, including current Mayor Peter Bober, welcomed Barry University president, Sister Linda Bevilacqua, OP. PhD., and other Barry community members to the city.
Barry’s College of Health Sciences has relocated two graduate health profession programs, Anesthesiology and Biomedical Sciences, to Hollywood. The university, with its main campus in Miami Shores, renovated the 10,000-square-foot firehouse, building new offices; classrooms; and a digital lab for faculty, staff and students. The new location includes a simulation center that provides realistic opportunities for nurse anesthesiology students to practice their skills before entering surgery.
Barry students and faculty will provide the city’s residents with community programs that emphasize health education, risk prevention, and wellness. Throughout the year, health seminars and screenings will be offered at the nearby Fred Lippman Multi-Purpose Center at 2030 Polk Street.
The partnership is part of an “Eds and Meds” economic development strategy. Funding for this project was provided in part through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Neighborhood Stabilization Program and Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA), in partnership with the City of Hollywood. The $1 million build-out will be repaid by the university and the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency through a 10-year development agreement.
